growisofs won't write double layer DVDs

Hi,
I'm trying to write double layer DVDs on my TS-L632C DVD burner.
It has always handled single layer DVDs fine and this is the first
time I have a problem. What I get is this...

Executing 'mkisofs -dvd-video -V DVD /home/abc/dvd | builtin_dd of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
Setting input-charset to 'UTF-8' from locale.
  0.17% done, estimate finish Thu Jan 1 13:43:04 2009
  0.35% done, estimate finish Thu Jan 1 13:43:04 2009
  0.52% done, estimate finish Thu Jan 1 13:43:04 2009
/dev/sr0: splitting layers at 1437552 blocks
:-[ SEND DVD+R DOUBLE LAYER RECORDING INFORMATION failed with SK=3h/POWER CALIBRATION AREA ERROR]: Input/output error

dmesg tells me that my device is

ata1.01: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632C, AS07, max UDMA/33
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100
ata1.01: configured for UDMA/33

dvd+rw-mediainfo gives me

The DVDs I use are made by TDK and I've tried more than one DVD.

One time I got the burner to do something different and give me

Executing 'mkisofs -dvd-video -V DVD /home/abc/dvd | builtin_dd of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
Setting input-charset to 'UTF-8' from locale.

:-? L0 Data Zone Capacity is set already
/dev/sr0: "Current Write Speed" is 2.5x1352KBps.
:-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=0h/ASC=00h/ACQ=02h]: Input/output error
:-( write failed: Input/output error

but that was only once out of a dozen tries.

Can anybody tell me what most likely the problem is here?
Is it the burner, the medium or just configuration that I could change?
It's a bit annoying to have a burner that's supposed to do double layer
but doesn't do it... :(

Cheers,
Christian
