What is the failure here when growisofs'ing a new disk?

Hi folks, I'm wondering if someone would characterise my growisofs problem for me, since I am not making much of the diagnostic output. What's going on here?

First up, some background on the system, in case it's relevant (sorry about not using Debian!):

arwen# uname -a
FreeBSD arwen.lorien.dawnbreaks.net 4.9-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 4.9-PRERELEASE #0: Tue Sep 9 21:47:28 CST 2003 db@arwen.lorien.dawnbreaks.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/ARWEN i386

arwen# camcontrol devlist
<PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105 1.30> at scbus0 target 0 lun 0 (cd0,pass0)
arwen# usbdev
usbdev: Command not found.

arwen# usbdevs
addr 1: UHCI root hub, VIA
addr 2: Keyboard NT6881, NOVATEK
addr 3: USB2.0 Storage Device, Cypress Semiconductor

Now, the output of persistently running the same instruction to growisofs (3 tries, same DVD. Same output for 2 'out of the packet' DVD disks):

arwen# growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/cd0c=dvd1.iso
Executing 'builtin_dd if=dvd1.iso of=/dev/pass0 obs=32k seek=0'
:-( unable to PERFORM OPC: Input/output error

arwen# growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/cd0c=dvd1.iso
Executing 'builtin_dd if=dvd1.iso of=/dev/pass0 obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/pass0: "Current Write Speed" is 4.1x1385KBps.
:-( unable to WRITE@LBA=310h: Input/output error
builtin_dd: 784*2KB out @ average 0.6x1385KBps
:-( write failed: Input/output error
/dev/pass0: flushing cache
/dev/pass0: updating RMA
/dev/pass0: closing disc

arwen# growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/cd0c=dvd1.iso
:-( /dev/cd0c: media is not recognized as recordable DVD: 10

And some output from dmesg:

arwen# dmesg
[...]
umass0: Cypress Semiconductor USB2.0 Storage Device, rev 2.00/0.01, addr 3
umass0: Get Max Lun not supported (STALLED)
cd0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
cd0: <PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105 1.30> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-0 device
cd0: 650KB/s transfers
cd0: cd present [1 x 2048 byte records]
[...]
umass0: BBB reset failed, TIMEOUT

thanks,
David.
