According to the specs on the drive it should handle DVD-R media OK.  So I 
would suggest trying different media.  Perhaps the media you have is not 
supported by the firmware in the drive properly.  You might also check for 
a firmware update as well for the drive.  Since it is working with DVD+RW 
and CD-R/RW type media, it only really leaves the DVD-R media itself.
