With  -use-the-force-luke  i do experience the warning
but no delay or message about "Sleeping" (as of dvd+rw-tools-5.19.4.9.7).

Overwriting the DVD with non-ISO data prevents the message
next time you use the DVD. (Like  -Z /dev/dvd=my_10_mb_of_zeros )
