Package: apt
Version: 0.9.7.1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Hi

I told my amd64 system to be able to install i386 packages with
'dpkg --add-architecture i386'

After an apt-get update I am now able to tell apt to use i386 versions
of packages. I need this for a third party package, that is not
available in 64bit.

apt seems to try to resolve packages from the foreign architecture only
from the foreign architecture, which fails if the dependency is for a
package, that is available for 'all'

I hit this, while trying to install libgnomeprint2.2-0:i386

# apt-get install libgnomeprint2.2-0:i386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libgnomeprint2.2-0:i386 : Depends: libgnomeprint2.2-data:i386 (=
2.18.8-3) but
it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

The Problem is, that libgnomeprint2.2-data is in the 'all' architecture,
so apt
should use that package to satisfy the dependency.

Or am I doing something horribly wrong here?

Regards
  nautsch

Hello

This is the correct behaviour. An architecture: all package must be
marked multi-arch: foreign (or allowed) to satisfy the dependencies of
a foreign-arch package:

A request to have this package marked multi-arch: foreign is already
filed and contains a patch you could use. You may instead be able to
use directly the package(s) from Ubuntu.
