Right, I *finally* got it to work. My Monitor section now looks like
this:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Philips 17B"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 30-66
VertRefresh 50-160
Option "DPMS"
Modeline "1152x864_17B" 95.74 1152 1160 1376 1480 864 864 874 886
Option "PreferredMode" "1152x864_17B"
EndSection
I had to define the mode 1152x864_17B explicitly, using just 1152x864
made the X server just ignore the line. Or rather: not ignore it cause
it turned up in the log file, but the driver used 1280x768 anyway.
Still a bug in my book, but I found a workaround.
