Package: xdm
Version: 4.1.0-13
Severity: normal

Hello, recently I upgraded from Debian potato to woody and found that xdm
wouldn't start any more. There turned out to be two bugs:

1) xdm (or some script called by /etc/init.d/xdm; I really got totally lost in all that
stuff) tries to start the binary "/etc/X11/X" which of course isn't there. I
worked around this by making a symbolic link from my actual Xserver binary to
/etc/X11/X:

-----
dh@kir:/etc/X11$ ls -l X
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  root    26 Feb 18 09:44 X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_3DLabs*
dh@kir:/etc/X11$
-----

For some reason or other, the correct contents of the file /etc/X11/Xserver
seem to be ignored:

-----
dh@kir:/etc/X11$ cat Xserver
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_3DLabs
Console

The first line in this file is the full pathname of the default X server.
The second line shows who is allowed to run the X server:
RootOnly
Console (anyone whose controlling tty is on the console)
Anybody

dh@kir:/etc/X11$
-----

2) The Xserver was looking for XF86Config in /etc, not in /etc/X11 (where it
always was). A symbolic link fixed that, too. I don't know if this is an xdm
bug or an xserver-3dlabs bug.

Maybe I overlooked something during the configurarion process in the upgrade.

Thanks for maintaining xdm,
**Daniel
