Bug#384105: #384105 /usr/X11R6/bin/X: X server slow

The problem on Ubuntu is "solved". I had been using the vesa driver
(in /etc/X11/xorg.conf), changing to the ati driver (as what I have)
fixed the problem. Oddities: "cat /proc/mtrr" thought I had 128MB
only, setting "VideoRAM 262144" in xorg.conf (for the ati driver)
fixed that; but this change was not affecting (was not needed to fix)
performance; and setting VideoRAM with the vesa driver had absolutely
no effect (the setting seemed ignored).

If the vesa driver worked fine on Ubuntu 6.06 dapper, why does not it
work on Ubuntu 6.10 edgy?

Not the same problem with Debian: on various Debian machines with the
problem, I use the ati, nvidia and i810 drivers. (I use vesa also, but
not on the machines where I noticed the problem.) I now tried setting
VideoRAM with nvidia and ati drivers, but this seems ignored (not
reflected in /proc/mtrr nor in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log output).
