If you can't start gdm with /dev/input/mice, in all probability it is
because the kernel module 'mousedev' is not loaded.  Along with the
'psmouse' module, that should give you a functional mouse.

(In case you are curious: 'mousedev' is the frontend, 'psmouse' is the
backend, 'input' is the glue between them, and is auto-loaded.)
