Package: libxrender1
Version: 0.8.3-4
Severity: normal

I tried to remove libxrender1 (using dselect) and got the following error on the second diversion
removal: "dpkg-divert: rename involves overwriting `/usr/X11R6/lib/libXrender.so.1' with different file
`/usr/X11R6/lib/libXrender-1.1.so.1', not allowed".

I removed the newer symbolic link manually and was then able to remove the package using dselect. If I
reinstall the package and then try to remove it again, I repeat the problem.

After removal of the package by the above method, the link from libXrender.so.1 to libXrender.so.1.0
looks similar to everything else in the directory (same naming conventions and same timestamps).

libxrender-dev - X Rendering Extension client library (development files)

libxrender1-dbg - X Rendering Extension client library (unstripped)
Closes: 222343
Changes:
 xrender (0.8.3-5) unstable; urgency=high
 .
   * Urgency due to fix for grave bug.
 .
   * Each of libxrender1, libxrender1-dbg, and libxrender-dev now conflict with
their xlibs counterparts versioned less than 4.2.1, because the Xrender
shared objects and related files in xlibs 4.1.0 are named
     "libXrender.so.1.0", not "libXrender.so.1.1" as the dpkg-divert commands
in the xrender package's maintainer scripts expect. This prevents
libxrender1 from being removed because. We also can't add
conditionals to handle this because the user might upgrade xlibs to 4.2.1
     in the meantime. (Closes: #222343)
