I don't know if I'm sending to the right person or not, but I saw your name
coming up in the Changelog for debconf several times, and although I'm not
sure if this comes under debconf or not, I'm going to give it a shot anyway..
I have a pretty old system, graphics card is a Number Nine Motion 771 with a
Sony Multiscan 15sf2 monitor.
I'm using XFree86 4.1.0-16, and xserver-s3 (3.3.6). Some other details, I'm
using KDE, in 800x600 mode, FWIW.
After setting up XF86Config , my screen showed a bit of flicker and there was
an appreciable black band around the perimeter.. neither of which were there
on the screen when running Mandrake. I snarfed the XF86Config from Mandrake
and edited a few things and it was better.
After doing some experimenting and comparing, I noticed that the XF86Config
created by Mandrake had some more ModeLine declarations than what I got with
the debconf method.
Here is a snippet from the Mandrake version:

# This is a set of standard mode timings. Modes that are out of monitor spec
# are automatically deleted by the server (provided the HorizSync and
# VertRefresh lines are correct), so there's no immediate need to
# delete mode timings (unless particular mode timings don't work on your
# monitor). With these modes, the best standard mode that your monitor
# and video card can support for a given resolution is automatically
# used.

Some of these may have appeared in the debconf file, I didn't check them out,
but I added the two lines under which I have added carets to my file created
by debconf and now I have a full-screen flicker-free display.
Now, I was wondering if there might be any way to add any of these modes to
our setup .. I just added them within the "debconf block", so will lose them
if I ever reconfigure with debconf.
I feel that it would be a great to get these modelines added, as it would
seem to me that our setup may be a bit incomplete at this time.
If you have nothing to do with this, please forgive me, but if so, perhaps
you could forward this to someone involved or else could you let me know the
proper way (and people) to get this done?
I have been working with Debian for a couple of months.. I had been using
Mandrake, but had decided to go with something that might be a bit more
conservative, I guess you'd say... So far, I feel more content with Debian,
although setup was a bit more "automatic" with Mandrake, although not
everyting was.. but it's been quite educational and quite a good experience.
Thank you for your time and I hope I've not been too much of a bother..
