Well I have to admit that it was kinda cool to watch the results of
apt-get install msttcorefonts

Yes, it did! thanx!
Combined with an appropriate FontPath entry of
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
this made Opera start displaying web pages nicely.
