You can retrieve the old version by reversing the deletion using the
merge options. If the file was deleted at revision 1.7 (look for the
"stae: dead" in the log), you do this:

   cvs update -j1.7 -j1.6 filename

Then update the file as normal, and then add it back:

   cvs add filename
   cvs commit filename
