So I was off by an order of magnitude. Big deal. :)
For some reason people are reluctant to modify the websync.conf file. All
you need to do is to add a --exclude=whatever entry to the EXCLUDE variable
to get rid of something. This particular file seems particularly annoying.
I just looked at the file and it seems to be of little value so I added
--exclude=gnome/lxr/xref to the entry adding the gnome pages into the Debian
web space.

BTW, I remember what the history of the pages is (it would be nice to not be
going in so many directions so I could remember these things). Joey asked
that Debian become a gnome mirror so I mirrored the site into our web directory.
The problem is that their pages depend on SSI. We could easily turn that on
for www.debian.org, but after the hassles trying to get the mirrors to turn
on content negotiation I wasn't going to waste my time trying to get the mirrors
to also do that.

Wml would fit the gnome uses perfectly so I convinced Joey to talk to them
about switching to using that instead. Personally, I see little use for SSI
when you are essentially serving static pages.
