conversation online - for instance it would have been great to have a
wishlist bug report with your suggested patch.  (It would make sense

Agreed, but nothing we can do about that now.
 
even now to submit a tested patch for d/rules of rsync.)

I just checked my archive, and it seems like I only offered a patch, without actually sending it. Given that this was a few years ago, such a patch would probably need to be re-done from scratch anyway, so I don’t think there’s too much value in digging any further.
