smartctl -i /dev/sda

can give you the make and model + serial number without shutting down

and the local mail server is not the issue - it is the mail client you use.

Perhaps you need to look closer at your GRUB configuration and setup the
boot process using the UUIDs of the disks/partitions, unless the BIOS is
really stupid and can not cope with your hardware
