Before your upgrading, mysql function well?

As root try

# netstat -nltp

you may notice:

tcp        0      0 127.0.0.1:3306          0.0.0.0:*
LISTEN      15347/mysqld

if you don't see it.
try:
# /etc/init.d/mysql restart

if still not work, check whether you set up your firewalls provided that
you have the mysql-server installed.
