Vital packages then ask to enter a > loong phrase, which I do not so they'll stay installed. I less drastic method is to mark all installed packages as automatically installed (Shift-m). Aptitude will still offer to uninstall a lot of packages, just go through the list and press '+' on the ones you want to keep.
