so, you could also look for clustering file systems - lustre, glustre,
grid, ceph, etc. i've put this in an email before, so see:

as far as allowing a single namespace for samba, iirc windows has that
functionality so samba might. however, you might need to research how
samba namespaces work and setup a heartbeat type system to fail over
nicely (or somewhat nicely since i'm sure doing it this way, users
will still get an error from transfers and the likes).
