I use Alt/AltGr to get dead keys, e.g.
AltGr-[ e -> é
AltGr-] e -> è
AltGr-; e -> ë
AltGr-# e -> ê
AltGr-~ e -> ẽ
I've also remapped functions keys to get the most common accented
characters, but not all keyboards have working function keys.
