Re: Extending and releasing open source software

If you nose around in packages.debian.org, you'll find various copyright statements for packages that include code from multiple sources. Here's one example (for the Gimp):

The GIMP source is available at ftp.gimp.org:/pub/gimp.

Copyrights for GIMP-related packages:

gimp
---------
Copyright (C) 1995 Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis

The GIMP may be redistributed under the terms of the GNU GPL,
Version 2 or later, found on Debian systems in the file
/usr/share/common-licenses/GPL

The only exceptions are in in plug-ins/common/tiff.c and plug-ins/common/gif.c:

/*
** tifftopnm.c - converts a Tagged Image File to a portable anymap
**
** Derived by Jef Poskanzer from tif2ras.c, which is:
**
** Copyright (c) 1990 by Sun Microsystems, Inc.
