Re: Debian vs. ATI Radeon x1650

I want a new display adapter/video card with two DVI ports to use for a
two screen setup to replace the adapter/card built in to my Foxconn
mainboard which has only one VGA port. I found a place in Toronto where
I can buy a Radeon X1650 XT for CA$40.00. I checked the URLs in
thveillon.debian's post, with the following results described inline in
those parts of the post quoted below (thanks Tom):

> what driver are you using ? Free "ati/radeon" or "fglrx" proprietary driver?

I would use the free ati/radeon.

It says that the X1630 is RV530, RV535, RV560 based card which supports
3-D. The description for Lenny package xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd states:

X.Org X server -- AMD/ATI r5xx, r6xx display driver
This package provides the driver for the Radeon r5xx and r6xx family
 of chipsets, including the X1550, X1300, X1550, X1600, FireGL V3300/V3350,
 FireMV 2250, X1800, FireGL V5300/V7200/V7300/V7350, X1300 XT, X1600,
 FireGL V3400/V5200 X1300, X1650, X1950 Pro/GT, X1650, X1900, X1950,
 FireStream 2U, HD 2900 XT, HD 2400 Pro/XT, HD 2600 Pro/XT, Mobility X1300,
 X1350, Mobility X1400, X1450, X2300, Mobility X1600, X1700, Mobility
 FireGL V5200, V5250, Mobility X1800, X1900, Mobility FireGL V7100, V7200,
Mobility HD 2300, Mobility HD 2400, Mobility HD 2600, and Radeon X1200.

According to the previous website the RV5xx chipsets are "are cut down
and thus slower versions of the R#00 chipsets with the same model number
(and are often even slower than lower-numbered chipsets)." So, is it
safe to assume that a driver for the r5xx chipset family would also work
for the rv5xx chipsets? I can live with the lower speed because I do
not use the computer for games.

> and show us your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (maybe empty).

Not empty in my case but so far contains nothing relating to the monitor.

It may however be useful to add to that conf file the three new sections
mentioned in http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon.

So, based on the foregoing, should I take the plunge and buy it in the
hope that I can get it to work? If it does not then I am out the
CA$40.00, because I will not be able to return it.
