virtual screen size, Lenny, xorg, Shuttle Xpc
In Debian Lenny, newly installed:
Wanted a virtual X screen size
bigger than the physical screen size;
The machine is a Shuttle Xpc.

this is the xorg.conf as it came (or was installed by Lenny):

This is the xorg.conf as I attempted
to get it to produce a virtual screen size

>From comments online,
http://www.x.org/archive/X11R6.8.0/doc/xorg.conf.5.html ,
accessed 2009-04-26,
and more or less duplicated in the <man xorg.conf> man-page:
*Display* subsections have the following format:
* SubSection "Display"*
* Depth */depth/
/ entries/
/ .../
* EndSubSection*
...
*Virtual */xdim ydim/
This optional entry specifies the virtual screen resolution to be
used. /xdim/ must be a multiple of either 8 or 16 for most drivers,
and a multiple of 32 when running in monochrome mode. The given
value will be rounded down if this is not the case. Video modes
which are too large for the specified virtual size will be rejected.
If this entry is not present, the virtual screen resolution will be
set to accommodate all the valid video modes given in the *Modes*
* entry. Some drivers/hardware combinations do not support virtual
* screens. Refer to the appropriate driver-specific documentation for
* details.
The last three lines hint at the problem,
but I'm not sure where to look for more information.
dexconf merely recreates the distribution xorg.conf, as quoted above.
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg,
so far as I could understand its choices,
did no better.
The very same hardware with x.org
worked with a virtual screen size on an older version of Debian,
probably Sid or Etch; not sure which one.
Any thoughts?

FWIW,
here is the older xorg.conf,
from the earlier version of Debian:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
