True, that will not necessitate a recompile. But, the next time you
build your kernel, just use
make-kpkg -rfakeroot --initrd --revision=custom.1.0 kernel_image
Also, to easily make an initramfs, I use update-initramfs as follows:
sudo update-initramfs -c -v 2.6.29
