You need to set the "local version" in "make menuconfig", or edit
the CONFIG_LOCALVERSION variable in .config. Here's what mine looks
like:
$ grep rlj /boot/config-2.6.24smp
CONFIG_LOCALVERSION="rlj_smp"
$ dir /lib/modules
