Hey
I am a vi/vim/gvim user but if you were to dismiss the vi/emacs
families then the default gnome editor gedit is actually surprisingly
good. It has syntax highlighting, milti-tabbed editing, compile, run,
etc (using 'external tools' plugin), and heaps of plugins for extras
like command completion etc. Just because it's the default doesn't mean
it needs replacing.
On the other hand, if you're after a full IDE, especially for java,
then Eclipse (www.eclipse.org) is probably the weapon of choice from
what I hear.
