Could be several things.  Have you tried just creating ~/.kde?  It seems
that totem believes it's in a KDE environment and is wrong.


Yes, I have ~/.kde but I would prefer to get rid of all of the unused
KDE folders, simlinks, etc. if possible, since I no longer am using
any KDE components that I know of.

Also, do a

        find ~ -name "*mcop*" -exec ls {}  \;

and see if there might be an mcop file owned by (for instance) root that
totem running as you is unable to delete or overwrite.

Here is the result:

$ find ~ -name "*mcop*" -exec ls {}  \;
/home/user/.mcoprc
random-seed  trader-cache

The idea would first be to reorient totem towards GNOME somehow, wouldn't it?
