Thanks, Florian.

That hit the problem:

topsi:~# apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: (none)
  Package pin: (not found)
  Version table:
     1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-1 999
        500 http://ftp.debian.org etch/main Packages
topsi:~#

Removing

Package: firefox
Pin: release a=sarge-backports
Pin-Priority: 999

from /etc/apt/sources.list brings an install candidate

topsi:~# apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
  Installed: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-1
  Candidate: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-1
  Version table:
 *** 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-1 0
        500 http://ftp.debian.org etch/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
topsi:~#

and installs.

Many thanks,
Rainer
