I had check that there's no scripts dir there at all.

It should be there, assuming you've installed linux-tree-2.6.17. And yes,
I've successfully installed vmware 5.5 on a 2.6.16 machine. If the scripts
directory isn't there, try;
apt-get install linux-tree-2.6.17
cd /usr/src
tar xjf linux-source-2.6.17
and try the build again.
