but it said that openoffice.org-core conflicted with openoffice.org-help-en. I removed the help package from the list and the install went just fine, except... I have no help files.
They are lurking here:

http://www.backports.org/debian/pool/contrib/o/openoffice.org-help/

You should add the "contrib" section to the relevant line
in /etc/apt/sources.list.
I had contrib in /etc/apt/sources.list, but the problem was what packages name to use. I found reference to three diffierent package names in error messages, apt-cache show, etc. None were correct. Once you pointed me to contrib, I could see the actual package names and got it installed.

Also, when I start openoffice with the ooffice command it says:

~$ ooffice
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
[SNIP]

In the Etch version of OOo, you can manually add a JRE using Tools ->
Options -> OpenOffice.org -> Java.
Yes, that seems to work, here, too.

Thanks a lot.

What?! Look, somebody's got to have some damn perspective around here.
Boom. Sooner or later ... boom!
