This might not be related to your problem but I don't see any mention
of using -v twice in the man page.  I'm guessing the poster that
suggested using the command you have here made a typo and meant to
write -cvzf.

I doubt that it will fix your problem, but if it does I'd bet the
maintainer would like to know.
