about tar

    Dear  Friends I wrote tar -czvf
/disk1/data/folders    /disk1/data/xyz but gives error
below:

  tar (child): /disk1/data/folders : cannot open :is a
directory 
  tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
  tar : Child status return 2
  tar : Error exit delayed from previous errors

 in the /disk1/data/folders there are more than 200
sub folders and I want to compress all of them. Can
any body help me. Thank you.
