Still no luck.

An excellent guess, but that turns out not to be it.

indicates that setting LD_ASSUME_KERNEL isn't necessary with Matlab
after version 6.5.1.  And in fact I've been running Matlab quite
happily under 2.6 kernels for a long time (works great on my
Debian-Testing machine, and worked last month on my Unstable box).

Any other ideas?

For the 2.6.* kernel you have to do,
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1
or 2.2.5
