(self-reply re: subject) The fix is easy, and rather easy if you read through the right documentation which in this case is: http://fontconfig.org/fontconfig-user.html (search for conf.d) To gloablly disable sub-pixel hinting, create a symlink in /etc/fonts/conf.d: 99-no-sub-pixel.conf -> no-sub-pixel.conf That should shut up anything X pulls from a connected display and also seems to serve as a valid default in case the per-user configuration fails to explicitly set the rgba-flag to "none" and constantly overwrites the file.
