Re: How to disable sub-pixel hinting?

(self-reply re: subject)

The fix is easy, and rather easy if you read through the right documentation
which in this case is:
http://fontconfig.org/fontconfig-user.html
(search for conf.d)

To gloablly disable sub-pixel hinting, create a symlink in /etc/fonts/conf.d:
99-no-sub-pixel.conf -> no-sub-pixel.conf

That should shut up anything X pulls from a connected display and also seems
to serve as a valid default in case the per-user configuration fails to
explicitly set the rgba-flag to "none" and constantly overwrites the file.
