Sound not working--ALSA and unstable
Hi all,
I'm running unstable with the Debian kernel 2.6.10. After a recent
(1-2 weeks ago) dist-upgrade, my sound stopped working, with the
following symptoms. (I'm using ALSA, and it had been going just fine.)
My onboard sound chip is a VIA 82C686.
Basically, none of the usual sound tools work:
** XMMS under GNOME gives a message saying "Couldn't open audio; Check
to see if your soundcard is properly configured; Make sure you have
the correct output plugin selected; Make sure no other program is
blocking the soundcard."
I did specify the ALSA output plugin in XMMS preferences, but it didn't help.
** mpd gives the following error in its log:
Mar 19 09:44 : problems opening audio device while playing "mp3/Beatles - Revolv
er/The-Beatles---02----Eleanor-Rigby.mp3"Mar 26 12:02 : current locale is "C"
Mar 26 12:02 : setting filesystem charset to ISO-8859-1
Mar 26 12:02 : unable to open oss mixer "/dev/mixer"
** And mpg321 from the command line gives:
server1:/mnt/music# mpg321 *
High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2, and 3.

Can't find a suitable libao driver. (Is device in use?)
But, if I specify Alsa output, it works just fine:
server1:/mnt/music# mpg321 -o alsa *
High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2, and 3.

I see neither /dev/mixer, nor /dev/audio, nor /dev/dsp:
server1:/dev# ls mixer*
ls: mixer*: No such file or directory
server1:/dev# ls dsp*
ls: dsp*: No such file or directory
server1:/dev# ls audio*
ls: audio*: No such file or directory
As to mixers: alsamixer opens a mixer interface just fine, but aumix gives:
server1:/dev# aumix
aumix: error opening mixer
The GNOME mixer likewise doesn't work.
Here's the output of lsmod. (I don't know what to make of all those
IDE modules--I certainly don't have that hardware... but perhaps that
a separate problem.)
server1:/# lsmod

I'm stumped. I've tried loading and unloading the snd_via82xx module,
but that didn't help. I'm sure there's some sort of strange alsa
configuration problem, but I don't really know where to start. Any
help much appreciated.... (I did try running alsaconf, but that didn't
change anything.) Again, this was all working fine a few weeks ago,
prior to the dist-upgrade. Unfortunately, a ton of stuff was upgraded,
and I don't know exactly what.
Thanks,
c.
