I've ended up having to run a window manager for this project, per a few
suggestions, I'm starting with ion, ion3 to be precise. It seems to work well
enough. If I can figure out how to disable the menu system, all should be
well. If not, I'll do some more experimenting.
If I may interject for a moment here... I find it a shame (even ridiculous
perhaps?) that OOo is window manager dependent for a process like this,
regardless of the platform. One would think that an app like this, which you
might expect to be used in many a kiosk type situation (schools, offices,
and such) to be more 'kiosk friendly'. When first investigating this, I found
that this issue has been known for quite some time now, according to the Ooo
forums. Since this project is running on Debian, I'd hoped that the community
here might have some ideas, which it did (thanks btw). Hopefully will be
addressed in the next major release of OOo. Unfortunately, that will be too
late for this project. Perhaps the saddest aspect of this is that I was able
to get the desired effect using Crossover Office + MS Office, but the
licensing fees are way beyond the budget for this project.
Once again, thanks for the suggestions.
