Been there :) You're looking at the rough equivalent of the MS-DOS
prompt.
Since your're new to linux, I strongly recommend you get a copy of
Ubuntu (http://ubuntulinux.org) and install that. It's debian based and
designed to get you up and running. It's free, and, if you don't have
high speed internet access I'd be happy to mail you a copy.
