Ok,

now we can start the diagnosis. ;-)

When you run LILO under Linux (so that it re-writes
the boot sector), does it give any errors? The error
code you get during the boot process doesn't bode well,

--- (excerpt from lilo's documentation) ---

0x01 "Illegal command". This shouldn't happen, but if it does, it may
indicate an attempt to access a disk which is not supported by the
BIOS. See also "Warning: BIOS drive 0x<number> may not be accessible"
 in section "Warnings".

--- (end) ---

but maybe LILO already issues warnings when trying
to install the boot sector. The output of

/sbin/lilo -v

(executed as root) would be helpful. You still have a chance
to boot to Linux, haven't you (boot floppy, liveCD)? :-)
