1) I am in the audio group
2) I can use other sound devices so I'm pretty sure I have this covered
3) It is using the alsa output plugin. I don't understand the second
part of this sentence though. (Sorry linux sound has been the biggest
hassle for me as far as moving to linux)

You need to
- make sure you are in the audio group
- that after you logged in as a user, the channels are not muted
- xmms uses the ALSA output plugin, if you use ALSA, or the ALSA OSS
emulation is activated
