cups: lpq: error - no default destination available.

I'm using cups with the lp bsd compatibility stuff.   Recently when
trying to check the queue or submit a job via the bsd commands (lp, lpq,
etc), I get errors like this:

ryan@mango:~$ lp testlist.txt
lp: error - scheduler not responding!
ryan@mango:~$ lpq
lpq: error - no default destination available.

Any ideas?
