Does your keyboard work? Use ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to the virst VC.
F2-F6 are the rest, and F7 is X. (usually)

Disabling gdm at startup is done by running dpkg-reconfigure gdm and
selecting the correct option I believe. Or it might be that this is
set from the xfree-common stuff. Removing gdm temporarily is probably
a surefire way to stop it from starting up though.
