Hi Andrew.

It occurred to me that, if you're having trouble with both gcc-3.3 and
gcc-3.4, it might be an ld error (which I should have realized almost
immediately), so I just looked at the bugreports for binutils.  Here's
what I found:

The submitter included a log file that describes your exact problem. 
Have you tried removing the execute bit from ld.so?
