The only reason I tried to login as root was just to see if this was a 
KDE problem.  For all the other tests within KDE, I _was_ indeed logged 
in as a regular user.  As I said before, I was unable to do anything 
that required a root password while logged in as a regular user (su, 
kpackage, etc...).

Something is definitely and seriously screwed up here, and I need to 
figure out soon how to fix it, before I succumb to the urge to reinstall.
