Start in single-user mode. At the boot: prompt, enter something like 
"linux single". Once you're in single-user mode, disable your 
xdm/gdm/wdm/kdm (lots of different ways; I'd put an "exit 0" as the 
first executable line in the appropriate script, such as 
"/etc/init.d/kdm"). Then "exit" to finish booting normally, only without 
the GUI loading. Now you can proceed to fix your problem.
