Well you've done your homework and checked the obvious things.
It looks to me as though your new kernel is missing a crucial option
from its config. Try a diff of the old and new configs. There will be
a lot of noise, going from 2.4 to 2.6. But the answer is probably in
there, somewhere in the SCSI section.
How did you configure your 2.6 kernel? Did you use 'make oldconfig', or
load the old 2.4 config in the GUI, or start from scratch?
