Did you recently change your kernel? rxvt/gnome-terminal require you to have the "pts" file system mounted. It's part of devfs in 2.4, but NOT in 2.6. Run "mount" and you should see output like this: devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620) or something about devfs if you're using devfs with 2.4.
