I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but for the 2.6 series of kernel, IDE
cdroms are no longer SCSI emulated.  This is why the ide-scsi has been
deprecated, and you can do a hdc=cdrom instead.  At my place, I don't see
any IDE drivers in my /proc/scsi/scsi.

I didn't realize that I hadn't tested dvd play before you mentioned it (I've
been testing udev... really nice once you get it up).
At my place (stock 2.6.2 kernel), xine stopped working with 2.6.2 (freeze
like yours, I guess), but ogle and mplayer works fine, no problems (no
pause or anything).

Remember that 2.6 uses another set of modules.conf files (/etc
modprobe.conf) files.
