My $0.02 is: 2 ethernet cards, 2 cross-wire TP cables, one decent Debian
installation turned into a router:

[Brother] <-----> :eth0:[decent OS + decent HW]:eth1: <-----> [DSL]

You should be able to use the fax email feature, and sniff with tcpdump
on either of the eth[01] interfaces.
