The fact that he mentions the NIC probably means that he has the machine
configured to use it as the gateway.  He needs to get rid of that.  He
wants the PPP connection to be his gateway, but that will be taken care of
automatically.

Configuring PPP and starting and stopping it are two different things.  I
suggest that he use pppconfig (he has it installed) to configure PPP.  He
can then use pon and poff to start and stop it or install and use gpppon if
he must have a GUI.  PPP can also be configured to start on demand.

However, as you pointed out, the first step is to get the winmodem working
(or better, replace it with a real modem).
