I think you haven't screwed nothing, i've noticed problems too with
some java applet running in the browser, usually multimedia java
applet. IIRC there's an option on Mozilla on what backend to use for
the audio (dpkg-reconfigure -plow mozilla-browser), maybe this can
help. Alsa should be able to do audio mixing too.
